(CEP News) - According to data released by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on Friday, inflation in Japan rose slightly faster than expected in June, with prices in Tokyo growing 1.5% year-over-year, above the previous month's 0.9% gain and above forecasts for a 1.2% increase.
Excluding fresh foods, CPI was up 1.3%, above forecasts for a 1.1% increase and higher than the previous month's 0.9% gain. Tokyo CPI excluding fresh foods and energy advanced 0.3% against calls for a 0.2% annual growth rate and the 0.1% rise seen in May. National Japanese CPI rose 1.3% year-over-year in May, in line with estimates and above April's 0.8% increase. CPI excluding fresh food rose 1.5% year-over-year in April, above estimates for a 1.4% gain and the previous month's 0.9% increase. Consumer prices excluding fresh food and energy fell 0.1% year-over-year compared to forecasts for no growth and April's 0.1% annual decline. By Erik Kevin Franco,
