Seasonally adjusted Labour Force figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicate that employment in Australia increased by 25,400 to 10,712,900 in April 2008. Full time employment increased by 19,000 to 7,658,000, with part-time employment increasing by 6,300 to 3,054,900.
The unemployment rate for the nation increased by 0.1 percentage point to 4.2%. The male unemployment rate increased marginally to 4.0%, with the female unemployment rate increasing by 0.2 percentage points to 4.5%. In terms of job hunting, the number of people looking for full-time work increased by 17,300 to 330,500. The participation rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 65.4%. The ABS figures indicate that within the provinces, the unemployment rate in New South Wales rose from 4.3% to 4.4% (seasonally adjusted), with Victoria also recording an increase to 4.6%, up from 4.3%. Further north in Queensland the rate edged-up slightly to 3.7%, while in South Australia it has risen from 4.6% to 4.9% in April 2008. In the mining and resources province of Western Australia, the unemployment rate has remained steady at 3.3%. Further south in the island province of Tasmania, unemployment has fallen from 4.8% in March, now at 4.2% for the month. In the Northern Territory, where only trend estimates are derived by the ABS, the rate fell to 4.3%, while in the Australian Capital Territory it rose slightly to 2.8% compared with 2.7% last month (again, trend only).
