Australian unemployment rate remains steady at 4.3% in July 2008 Print E-mail

Seasonally adjusted Labour Force figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicate that employment in Australia increased by 10,900 to 10,721,500 in July 2008. Full time employment increased by 53,700 to 7,718,400 with part-time employment also increasing by 42,800 to 3,003,100.

The unemployment rate for the nation remained steady at 4.3%. The male unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage point to 3.9%, with the female unemployment rate increasing by 0.2 percentage points to 4.8%.

In terms of job hunting, the number of people looking for full-time work increased by 7,200 to 325,800. The participation rate also remained steady at 65.3%.

The ABS figures indicate that within the provinces, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in New South Wales rose from 4.6% to 4.7%, with Victoria remaining steady at 4.6%. Further north in Queensland the rate fell slightly against last month's figure of 3.8%, now at 3.7% for July, while in South Australia it has fallen from 4.8% to 4.6%.

In the mining and resources province of Western Australia, the unemployment rate has fallen from a revised 3.2%, now at 3.1% for July 2008.

Further south in the island province of Tasmania, unemployment has risen to 4.5% for the month. In the Northern Territory, where only trend estimates are derived by the ABS, the rate fell to 2.9% from a revised 3.2% last month, while in the Australian Capital Territory it remained steady at 2.7%, again trend only.
