(CEP News) - Construction work done in Australia for the second quarter of 2008 failed to deliver the expected 1.5% quarterly increase, according to the Statistics Bureau on Wednesday, which reported a 2.6% contraction in completed construction work done between April and June.
On the other hand, first-quarter construction work done in Australia was revised from a 2.3% expansion to a 5.0% rate of growth. Private construction for the second quarter contracted 1.3% on the quarter after rising 3.9% in Q1, while public construction disappointed with a 7.0% decline, partially reversing the previous quarter's 8.7% gain. Building construction expanded 0.2% compared to a 0.6% growth rate in Q1 and engineering projects contracted 6.0% after expanding 10.6% in Q1. By Erik Kevin Franco,
