(CEP News) Ottawa - Canada's five major political parties have carved up nearly $7.2 million in federal allowances for the second quarter of the year, Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand announced Thursday.
A registered political party that obtained at least 2% of all valid votes cast at a general election or at least 5% of the valid votes cast in the electoral districts in which it ran a candidate in a general election is eligible for the quarterly allowance, which works out to $0.4375 per valid vote received. The Conservative party was awarded the largest payment of just over $2.6 million while the federal Liberals received close to $2.2 million. The New Democratic Party received nearly $1.3 million, the Bloc Quebecois more than $758,000 and the Green Party of Canada just over $324,000. The payments are made in accordance with a section of the Canada Elections Act. By Geoff Matthews,
