(CEP News) - Stephen Harper said while he understands investors are shaken today, he does not believe government should make day-to-day decisions based on markets. Harper spoke in an interview with television network BNN.
The prime minister reiterated there was no crisis in the Canadian banking sector and the country has not seen a mortgage crisis like the one in the United States. "I don't think we should hit the panic button yet," he said. On the subject of the upcoming election, Harper said in light of the trouble in commodity markets, his opposition has chosen terrible timing to advocate a carbon tax. "It is the worst policy you could have," he said. He said his government will continue to keep business taxes down and keep the budget balanced. By Megan Ainscow,
