(CEP News) - Markets on Thursday will be awaiting jobless claims data, along with the Philly Fed Survey and remarks from U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.
U.S. Jobless claims continue to be a source of interest for markets. Economists are predicting initial jobless claims to come in at 505k for the week ending Nov.15, down from the prior week's 516k level. Continuing claims for the week ending Nov.8 are expected to rise to 3900k, up from the previous week's 3897k result. Markets will receive more regional manufacturing data with the release of the Philly Fed survey, which economists expect to fall to a level of -35.0 following October's level of -37.5. Economists from Barclays Capital are expecting a further decline in the manufacturing survey. "Our forecast of further deterioration in activity in this region owes to the continued sharp deceleration in manufacturing production across the country," they wrote."This is likely a function of weakening customer demand, heightened uncertainty about the economic outlook, and tighter credit conditions." In terms of speakers, markets will also be interested to hear from Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson when he speaks at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California. Also speaking tomorrow, Fed Governor Randall Kroszner will discuss the effects of the financial crisis on small businesses, and later on in the evening, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard will speak at an economic conference in Indiana.
