(CEP News) Frankfurt - The labour market in the euro zone deteriorated faster than expected in March, with the jobless reaching highs not seen since 2005, according to Eurostat.
The euro zone unemployment rate rose to 8.9% in March, its highest level since November 2005 and reflecting an increase of 419 000 people actively searching for employment. Economists had expected the rate to come in at 8.7%, unchanged from the previous month. March's increase brings the total number of unemployed to 14.158 million persons. In a press release issued on Thursday, Eurostat reported that the Netherlands registered the lowest jobless rate, at 2.8%, while Spain had the highest rate of joblessness, at 17.4%.
