(CEP News) Frankfurt - The volume of retail sales in the euro zone declined 0.8% from September to October, down from the previous month's flat reading and double the 0.4% contraction expected, according to a Eurostat press release issued on Wednesday. September's figure was revised up from the -0.2% previously reported.
Eurostat also reported that food, drinks and tobacco sales fell 0.5% month-over-month, while retail sales in the non-food sector slipped 0.9% over the same period. On an annualized basis, retail sales volumes fell 2.1% in October, down from both the 1.5% decline expected and September's annualized contraction of 1.4%.
