France's Sarkozy Opposed to Full EU Membership for Turkey, Milliyet Says

(CEP News) Frankfurt - French President Nicolas Sarkozy is opposed to the idea of full Turkish membership in the European Union, according to Turkish newspaper Milliyet.

While U.S. President Barack Obama called on EU leaders to accept Turkey's bid to enter the EU to help improve relations with the Islamic community, Sarkozy said on French television that a "privileged partnership" between the EU and Turkey should be established rather than granting the mainly-Muslim country full membership, Milliyet reported on Monday.
