Like-for-like retail sales in the United Kingdom declined by 1.2% in March, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC)'s retail sales monitor.
Meanwhile, sales rose only 0.6% year-over-year on a total basis. The BRC acknowledged that sales in March of last year were "very weak" due to inclement weather conditions, therefore implying the increase on the year is of negligible importance The BRC stated that March 2009 "food sales showed slightly stronger growth, partly inflation-driven," but said the fall in non-food sales was less than that posted for February. According to the BRC, non-food non-store sales (internet, mail-order and phone sales) rose 10.8% in March year-over-year, although this continued the pull-back from December's 30.0% rise for the sector.
