European Market Recap: European Bonds Rise Ahead of ECB & BOE Rates Print E-mail

(CEP News) - Ahead of the European Central Bank and Bank of England rate decisions, the German ten-year Bund was up 22.0 ticks to 114.63 with yields down 2.8 bps to 4.11% while the 10-year gilt was up 21.0 ticks to 111.97 with yields down 2.4 bps to 4.47%. The euro was down 0.11 cents to 1.4485 USD.

At 7 a.m. EDT, the Bank of England will make its interest rate announcement, and is expected to hold the Bank Rate unchanged at 5.00%. At 7:45 a.m. EDT, the European Central Bank is expected to leave rates unchanged at 4.25%.

However, the main event of the day comes at 8:30 a.m. EDT, when European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet will hold a press conference explaining the rate decision made earlier on Thursday morning.

The five-year Bobl was up 18.5 ticks to 108.67, the two-year Schatz up 3.5 ticks to 103.19 and the March 2009 Euribor contract trading flat at 95.23.

The spread between the 10-year Bund and 10-year U.S. Treasury notes widened 1.312 bps to -42.60.

UK 30-year bond yields were down 1.7 bps to 4.41%, five-year bond yields were down 4.3 bps to 4.33%, while yields on the two-year bond were down 4.3 bps to 4.38%.

The March 2009 Short Sterling contract was down 0.5 ticks to 94.95.

Yields on U.S. 10-year Treasury notes were down 1.3 bps to 3.686%.

European stock markets were mixed with the Eurostoxx down 4.91 points to 2878.81, the UK FTSE 100 up 20.10 points to 5519.801 and the German DAX down 77.57 points to 6389.92.

The Japanese Nikkei was trading down 131.93 points to 12557.66.

The Canadian dollar was up 0.09 cents to 0.9419 against the USD (1.0617 USD/CAD). Against the euro, the loonie was up 0.12 cents to 0.6503 (1.5377 CAD/EUR).

The U.S. dollar was up 0.06 to 108.35 and the euro was down 0.07 to 156.93, both against the yen.

The euro was down 0.11 cents to 1.4485 while the pound sterling was up 0.28 cents to 1.7797, both against the USD.

The euro was down 0.20 cents to 0.814 pounds.

The Swiss franc was flat on the day at 1.1062 against the USD and up 0.14 cents to 1.6023 against the euro.
