Market Recap: Treasury Curve Steepens and Stocks Hit Session High Print E-mail

(CEP News) - North American fixed income markets are mixed and equities are up with yields on U.S. 10-year Treasury Notes up 2.8 bps to 3.89% and Canadian 10-year CGBs up 5.8 bps to 3.68%. The Dow Jones industrial average is up 60.65 points to 13030.19 and the S&P TSX Composite Index up 123.77 points to 14398.11. The Canadian dollar is up 0.0099 to 0.9975 USD and the euro is up 0.0029 to 1.55255 USD.

Yields on two-year Canadian government bonds are up 2.1 bps to 2.80%, five-year yields up 4.3 bps to 3.14%, 10-year yields up 5.8 bps to 3.68% and 30-year yields up 5.9 bps to 4.17%. The Canadian 10-year note is yielding 21.17 bps less than the U.S. 10-year note.

U.S. two-year yields are down 4.9 bps to 2.37%, five-year yields down 1.0 bps to 3.15%, 10-year yields up 2.8 bps to 3.89% and 30-year yields up 3.6 bps to 4.64%. The Eurodollar September 08 contract is up 2.5 ticks to 97.33. The 10/2 year spread widened 7.83 bps to 152.52. The yield curve is steeper with the difference in yield between the U.S. two-year and 10-year notes up 7.8 bps to 152.52 bps.

In Germany, returns on two-year German bonds are down 5.6 bps to 3.77%, five-year yields down 5.2 bps to 3.89%, 10-year yields down 2.5 bps to 4.13% and 30-year yields down 0.9 bps to 4.61%.

Yields on UK two-year bonds are down 7.7 bps to 4.42%, five-year yields down 7.8 bps to 4.38%, 10-year yields down 7.0 bps to 4.67% and 30-year yields down 4.5 bps to 4.50%.

Toronto's S&P/TSX composite index is up 123.77 points to 14398.11, the Dow Jones industrial average up 60.65 points to 13030.19, the S&P 500 up 11.81 points to 1419.30 and the Nasdaq up 23.16 points to 2487.28.

European stock markets closed with the Eurostoxx down 19.14 points to 3262.20, the UK FTSE 100 down 0.30 points to 6215.20 and the German DAX down 34.98 points to 7017.10.

The euro is up 0.0029 to 1.5526 against the USD, down 0.0052 to 1.5565 against the Canadian dollar and higher by 0.18 at 162.66 against the yen.

Against the U.S. dollar, the Canadian dollar is up 0.0099 to 0.9975 and the Australian dollar is higher by 0.0028 to 0.9497.

The U.S. dollar is down 0.08 to 104.78 against the yen and the pound is up 0.0007 to 1.9727 USD.

The Canadian dollar is up 0.95 to 104.51 against the yen and higher by 0.0192 to 1.9776 against the pound sterling.

The U.S. Dollar Index was down 0.2390 to 72.9510.

WTI crude oil is up $1.89 to $121.86 while the front month gold contract at the Chicago Board of Trade is up $3.70 to $877.80.
