Mid-Morning Market Recap: U.S. Equities Down, Bonds up Print E-mail

(CEP News) - North American fixed income markets are mixed and equities are mixed with yields on U.S. 10-year treasury Notes down 2.2 bps to 4.09% and Canadian 10-year CGBs down 1.0 bps to 3.85%.

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 39.90 points to 11,592.48 and the S&P TSX Composite Index up 55.87 points to 13,568.53. The Canadian dollar is unchanged at 0.9912 USD and the euro is down 0.00 cents, to 1.5682 USD.

Yields on two-year Canadian government bonds are down 3.5 bps to 3.20%, five-year yields down 1.9 bps to 3.45%, 10-year yields down 1.0 bps to 3.85% and 30-year yields flat at 4.16%.

U.S. two-year yields are flat at 2.73%, five-year yields down 2.4 bps to 3.47%, 10-year yields down 2.2 bps to 4.09% and 30-year yields down 1.3 bps to 4.66%.

The Eurodollar September 08 contract is up 4.5 ticks to 97.08. The 10/2 year spread widened 2.86 bps to 140.83.

The yield curve is steeper with the difference in yield between the U.S. two-year and 10-year notes up 2.9 bps to 140.83 bps.

The Canadian 10-year note is yielding 24.18 bps less than the U.S. 10-year note.

In Germany, returns on two-year German bonds are down 12.4 bps to 4.46%, five-year yields down 11.7 bps to 4.54%, 10-year yields down 6.9 bps to 4.59% and 30-year yields down 4.7 bps to 4.83%.

Yields on UK two-year bonds are down 10.4 bps to 5.00%, five-year yields down 8.2 bps to 4.98%, 10-year yields down 3.1 bps to 5.02% and 30-year yields flat at 4.65%.

Toronto's S&P/TSX composite index is up 55.87 points to 13,568.53, the Dow Jones industrial average down 39.90 points to 11,592.48, the S&P 500 down 1.97 points to 1,280.22 and the Nasdaq down 5.18 points to 2,320.70.

European stock markets are lower, with the Eurostoxx down 5.95 points to 2884.73, the UK FTSE 100 down 29.20 points to 5420.70 and the German DAX down 57.89 points to 6478.20.

The Canadian dollar is up 0.00 cents to 0.9912 against the USD (1.0089 USD/CAD) and up 0.20 cents to 1.5821 (0.6321 CAD/EUR) against the euro.

The U.S. dollar was down 0.18 to 107.72 against the yen and the euro down 0.20 cents, to 1.5682 against the U.S. dollar.

The pound sterling was down 1.50 cents to 1.9847 USD and the Australian dollar was lower by 0.20 cents to 0.9603 USD.

The U.S. Dollar Index was up 0.121 points to 72.932.

Futures on WTI crude oil are up $0.43 to $124.87 while gold futures at the Chicago Board of Trade are up $2.50 to $925.70.
