MARKET WRAP: Stocks Traded Lower Ahead Powell Speech

*German factory order fell further; Sentix investor confidence dropped *UK HPI data fell to -0.4%, sterling remained dropped below 1.23 * Gold dropped to 1495 but the battle is on with the 1500 mark

Stocks

  • The S&P 500 Index traded soft ahead of Jerome Powell’s speech. Investors do not expect anything new from him today. The index dropped 0.42% as of 15:25 London time.
  • The Stoxx Europe 600 Index remained positive after feeble economic numbers. It soared 0.34% on a supportive stance from the ECB.
  • The UK FTSE 100 started the week on the front foot and increased by 0.37%.

Currencies

  • The Dollar Spot Index dropped by -0.04% due to the on-going weakness in the economic numbers.
  • The Euro moved higher mainly due to the dollar weakness. It gained 0.13% and made a high of 1.001.
  • The British pound reacted negatively to the weakness in the UK retails sales monitor data, actual -1.7% forecast -0.8%.
  • The Japanese yen moved lower by 0.03% to 106.97.

Bonds

  • The Yield on 10-year Treasuries gained three basis points to 1.54%.
  • Britain’s 10-year yield jumped to 0.455%.

Commodities

  • West Texas Intermediate gained 1.23% and made a high of 53.71
  • Gold needs to stay above the 1500 mark in order to convince more buyers. The price dropped by 0.21%.
