Eurozone CPI Rises to 3.8% as Energy Surge Overshadows Modest Core Inflation Increase

Eurozone inflation accelerated sharply in September, with headline CPI rising from 3.2% to 3.8% yoy, confirming Eurostat’s earlier flash estimate. Consumer prices increased 0.6% mom, with energy remaining the dominant driver of the acceleration. Annual energy inflation surged from 14.3% to 18.9%, while its contribution to headline inflation increased from 1.29 to 1.71 percentage points, overtaking services as the largest contributor. Energy accounted for most of the 0.6 percentage point increase in annual inflation, highlighting the extent to which the latest acceleration was driven by higher energy costs rather than a comparable strengthening across all consumer prices.

Underlying inflation also firmed, although considerably more modestly than the headline figure. Core CPI, which excludes energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, edged up from 2.4% to 2.5% yoy, with a monthly increase of 0.2%. Services inflation accelerated from 3.0% to 3.2% yoy, raising its contribution to headline inflation from 1.43 to 1.52 percentage points. However, non-energy industrial goods inflation eased from 1.2% to 1.1%, indicating that underlying price pressures were not strengthening uniformly. Food, alcohol and tobacco inflation increased from 1.1% to 1.3%, driven partly by a rise in unprocessed food inflation from 2.7% to 4.0%. The contrasting movements suggest that inflation pressures extended beyond energy, but the underlying acceleration remained relatively contained.

The acceleration was geographically widespread, with annual inflation rising in 23 EU member states, remaining unchanged in three and falling in just one. Among the Eurozone’s largest economies, Germany’s inflation increased from 2.9% to 3.3%, France’s from 2.6% to 3.4%, Italy’s from 3.2% to 4.2%, and Spain’s from 4.6% to 5.0%. EU-wide inflation also climbed from 3.2% to 3.8%, matching the Eurozone rate. The broad geographic increase reinforces the significance of September’s inflation acceleration. Nevertheless, energy accounted for the largest part of the Eurozone’s headline increase, while the more modest rise in core and services inflation points to a less pronounced strengthening in underlying price pressures.
