Japan PMI Manufacturing Rises to 54.9 as as AI Demand Drives Orders and Output

Japan’s manufacturing sector strengthened further in August, with PMI Manufacturing rising from 54.5 to 54.9, marking an eighth straight month of improvement and the second-highest reading since January 2022. New business expanded at the fastest pace since January 2018, while new export orders also accelerated to their quickest rate since the start of 2018. Firms cited stronger demand from North America, Southeast Asia and China, with semiconductors and AI-related products among key sources of growth.

Production remained strong, expanding at the second-fastest rate since February 2014, while employment increased at the quickest pace since February 2018. Purchasing activity also rose at its strongest rate since April 2022. Even with higher staffing, backlogs continued to build and stayed close to July’s multi-year record, pointing to sustained capacity pressure. Business confidence improved to a six-month high as manufacturers expected further gains in customer demand.

Cost pressures remained elevated but eased slightly. Input price inflation slowed to its weakest since March, though it stayed historically sharp as firms continued to face higher raw material and oil costs, Middle East-related disruption and a weak Yen. Supplier delivery times also lengthened at one of the fastest rates in four years. Overall, August survey points to broad-based manufacturing strength, led by orders, exports and production, while supply bottlenecks and high costs remain main constraints.
