US ADP Employment Beats at 90K, but Job Gains Remain Concentrated

US private-sector employment increased by 90K in September, beating expectations of 70K and accelerating from a revised 36K gain in August. The rebound marked a clear improvement after several months of softer hiring, while goods-producing industries added 31K jobs and services contributed 59K. Manufacturing employment rose 17K and construction added 15K, providing some breadth beyond the service sector.

The gains were nevertheless concentrated in a relatively narrow group of industries. Education and health services added 55K jobs and leisure and hospitality gained 22K, together accounting for most of the overall increase. By contrast, professional and business services shed 11K jobs and financial activities lost 16K, while trade, transportation and utilities were unchanged. Hiring was also strongest among medium-sized businesses, which added 54K jobs, compared with 23K at small establishments and 14K at large employers.

Pay growth remained firm without showing a fresh acceleration. Base pay rose 3.2% y/y and gross pay increased 4.7% y/y, while job-changers continued to enjoy a larger wage premium than workers staying with their employers.

Overall, the report provides a firmer labor-market signal ahead of Friday’s payrolls, showing that September private hiring recovered substantially from August’s weak pace. But the concentration of gains in a handful of sectors argues against reading the headline beat as evidence of uniformly stronger labor demand.
